Stephen Daldry’s multi award-winning National Theatre production of JB Priestley’s classic thriller returns to the second city!
Written at the end of the Second World War and set before the First, An Inspector Calls is a compelling and haunting thriller. The story begins when Inspector Goole arrives unexpectedly at the prosperous Birling family home. Their peaceful dinner party is shattered by his investigations into the death of a young woman. His startling revelations shake the very foundations of their lives and challenge us all to examine our consciences. More relevant now than ever, this is a must-see for a whole new generation.
Since 1992, Daldry’s production has won a total of 19 major awards, including four Tony Awards and three Olivier Awards, and has played to more than five million theatergoers worldwide. An Inspector Calls is the most internationally-lauded production in the National Theatre’s history - and the performance at The Alexandra did not disappoint!
From the moment the curtain raises your cast onto the cobbled streets of 1900’s Brumley and instantly see a beautiful portrayal of class divide. Children play in the streets, fighting over scraps whilst those higher up in society gather in a house situated near the back of the stage which later on opens out like a dolls house to portray an interior feel and forecasts just how they characters get played like dolls themselves.
I also need to mention the spectacular special effects, using an array of lighting, sparks, bangs and even the house itself moving to portray the fall of the Birlings and the Crofts. A truly excellent use to really entrance those watching into the mysterious story.
Special mention needs to go to Liam Brennan who perfectly encapsulated the persona of Inspector Goole and was absolutely faultless in his performance. Equal praise goes to Christine Kavanagh who put on a stellar performance as the venomous matriarch, Sybil Birling.
An Inspector Calls is a gripping thriller intertwined with deception, lies and mystery and runs at The Alexandra until Saturday 3rd December.
