REVIEW: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe at The Alexandra

It’s thanks to C.S. Lewis that we have the mystical land of Narnia in our lives and now its closer than ever as the audience steps through the wardrobe into the Alexandra theatre for an experience like no other.

Narnia has been plummeted into a 100 year winter, orchestrated by the cruel White Witch who rules with an iron fist. Hope is in short supply, until a daughter of Eve bumps into a talking faun causing their lives to change forever.

First thing’s first, this show is something incredibly special. The word ‘immersive’ can be overused but in this instance it’s absolutely justified. From the set to the lighting, the insane costumes to the out-of-this-world puppetry, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe set’s a standard which personifies quality.

Once you enter Narnia for the first time, the attention to detail is phenomenal, even down to the use of fake snow giving you chills as if you yourself had just entered this frozen land. Furthermore, the use of an amazing false wall at the back of the stage combined with some top notch lighting created an array of stunning silhouette work.

In fact, it’s that combination of sound and lighting which managed to portray a range of emotions alongside a cast who played their instruments live on stage throughout the show.

However what was really special was the combination of talent which left you feeling less like you were watching a play and more like you were inside the novel. That’s an incredibly difficult skill to master - and one the cast and crew have perfected brilliantly.

Special mention goes to Jez Unwin who magnificently plays the role of Mr Tumnus. His performance was truly captivating as were the performances by Ammar Duffus, Shaka Kalokoh, Robyn Sinclair and Karise Yansen; Peter, Edmund, Susan and Lucy Pevensie respectively.

For an other-wordly night out at the theatre, get to the Alexandra theatre before Saturday 12th March to catch The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. Tickets are available online at atgtickets.com/birmingham.
