Birmingham City Council has sold more than £56 million-worth of ‘assets’ this year as it continues to grapple with its financial woes.
An array of properties and land have been sold since the start of 2024 amid the crisis which has engulfed the local authority. They include the Bordesley Green ‘Wheels’ site, where a new stadium for Birmingham City FC has been proposed.
Other assets on the list, obtained through a Freedom of Information request, include a former children’s centre in Quinton, a petrol service station in Hockley and The Elegance Suite in Nechells.
Numerous assets across Birmingham have also been sold after going under the hammer at auction.
The city council has found itself dealing with Birmingham-specific problems, such as an equal pay fiasco and the disastrous implementation of a new IT and finance system, as well as other issues such as the rising demand for services and funding cuts.
The total value of all the council assets sold comes to £56,452,813.
