Birmingham Hippodrome breaks relaxed performance record

Bosses at Birmingham Hippodrome are celebrating after news they will have staged the most Relaxed Performances in the theatre’s history this year, after the upcoming performance of 'The Snow Dragon' in the Patrick Centre Studio tomorrow evening.

The Relaxed Performance programme also includes an extended pantomime offering over the festive period with two relaxed performances on Wednesday 24th January.

The theatre will have staged six inclusive performances this year and has already committed to a further six for 2018, which includes classics 'Hansel & Gretel' and 'Peter Pan'. As part of this programme, it has also announced that the Birmingham Royal Ballet will have its very first Relaxed Performance of 'Sleeping Beauty' on 20th February, 2018.

During relaxed performances the theatre alters the environment to suit its visitors with special access needs and complex disabilities. The doors are kept open to allow free movement in and out of the space, with break out areas close by. The break areas include a playroom and sensory room which gives people a place to relax and play during the show.

Certain aspects of staging are also specially adapted for the audience. For instance, the script may be adjusted with bright lights and loud noises reduced. Volunteers and Birmingham Hippodrome staff aim to create a relaxed atmosphere and the chance to create some magical memories for these special families. All staff have specialist training in advance of a Relaxed Performance. Liz Leck, Creative Learning Manager at Birmingham Hippodrome said:

“Everyone’s welcome here at Birmingham Hippodrome and we want to ensure we create an environment that is inclusive and suitable for people with specialist needs. Our Relaxed Performances provide an atmosphere where everyone feels safe and able to react to a show as they wish.

“I want to say a big thank you to all the supporters, volunteers and funders of our Relaxed Performance programme.”

Birmingham Hippodrome is a registered charity and uses money raised to fund its Hippodrome Projects, which includes relaxed performances. To find out more about the scheme, call the Creative Learning team on 0121 689 3064 or visit birminghamhippodrome.com/relaxed.
