Black Country Radio win Sports Show of the Year

Black Country Radio’s sport team have taken home the gold award for Sports Show of the Year at the Community Radio awards for the second year running.

The awards, which celebrate the best of local broadcasting, took place in Newcastle-upon-Tyne at the weekend and honoured the hard work of recipients from up and down the country.

The award was conferred for the station’s Non League Day special, broadcast in March. The judges commended the show’s professionalism and connection to the clubs in the local area. Black Country Radio’s Sports Editor, Roy Felstead, said:

"To take the top prize home last year was an honour, but to do so again this year is mind blowing. It's testament to the hard work of a team who spend hours of their time each week driving around the country and attending hundreds of games a year.

"We also couldn't do this without the support of our local non-league sides. We're blessed with teams across the Black Country who are both great at playing the game and are also thoroughly nice people. Thos one's for them too."

Adding his congratulation, station director, Dave Brownhill, said: "Local sport is one of the pillars of Black Country Radio and something we're proud to support.

"This award is incredibly well deserved by a team of people who care passionately about promoting grass roots sport and, to be able to say we're the best in the country in our field is something we're very proud of."

Martin Steers, awards chair, said: “We’ve been running the awards now for eight years, and as ever the standard is immense, and our judges have a really tricky job”.

The awards followed the UK Community Radio Network Annual Conference, which took place in the same venue earlier in the day.
