Black Country road to be renamed after confusion

A stretch of the new Brum Route which will be renamed in the Summer.

A main arterial route in the region is set to be renamed after visitors to the area complained its name was 'misleading'.

The stretch of the A4123 between Wolverhampton and Dudley - more commonly referred to as Birmingham New Road - will be renamed 'The Brum Route' after concerns that calling a road which was completed in 1927 'new' would confuse people.

Barnsely-born Fred Smith has relatives in the region and regularly visits them during school holidays. He said: "I myself wasn't born in the 20s, but if I was then I probably wouldn't refer to myself as new.

"I've got friends who hear us say 'Birmingham New Road' and they're looking for something constructed around the mid 2000s at the latest. One of the guys I work with said he wanted to visit Tipton and thought his sat nav was having a laugh!

"I fully support the idea and look forward to being able to accurately guide my friends to places they want to visit."

One local resident we spoke to simply said: "No."

Plans will be considered by the local authorities with a decision set to be made by the end of May.
