Blitz on dangerous and illegal drivers across the West Midlands

Drivers caught doing over 100mph on the M6 and using their mobile phone at the wheel were amongst those caught during a week-long blitz by traffic cops.

More than 270 offences were recorded across the West Midlands road network during a hard-hitting crackdown by Central Motorway Police Group.

Between 8-15 April there were 63 vehicles seized after drivers had no licence or insurance and 30 who were using their phone while driving. There were 87 cases of speeding which included one motorist on the M6 hitting 115mph and another doing 103mph.

A further driver was stopped on the M6 Toll doing 99mph − the day his disqualification had only expired that morning and that he had no insurance. The remaining offences ranged from not wearing a seatbelt, dangerous driving and shooting a red light. Superintendent Dean Hatton from CMPG said:

"We will not tolerate dangerous and illegal driving on our roads which put not only you as the driver, but other road users at risk. This week of action was one of many targeted operations we carry out across the West Midlands to stop irresponsible driving and those deliberately flouting the law.

"Speeding and being distracted while driving are two of the biggest killers on our roads, it is simply not worth the risk. I see the consequences and devastation of serious and fatal road traffic collisions too often and I would urge drivers to think carefully about their own actions while behind the wheel."

Punishments for offences on the roads range from driving bans, fines and prison terms.
