Council improvement plan gets the go-ahead

A plan to create an improved, lean and financially stable council delivering essential high-quality services to Dudley borough residents has been approved.

The Dudley Council Improvement Plan looks to improve the council itself as an organisation, the way it works with its partners and wider communities as well as the services it delivers to local people.

It sets out how the council will deliver services differently in future, while very much centring on community and resident’s essential needs.

There is a focus on continuous improvement with regular reviews, benchmarking and assessments to ensure the authority stays on track.

Additionally, an Improvement Panel has been set up to challenge the progress being made and act as a critical friend to decision makers and senior leadership.

The plan is based on the government’s Best Value Framework and has seven themes – leadership, culture, governance, use of resources, service delivery, partnerships and community engagement and continuous improvement.

Councillor Patrick Harley, leader of the council, said: “We continue to face unprecedented challenges. Reductions in central government funding, increasing and costly demands, along with unavoidable cost increases, means we have to do more, with less.

“Over the past year we have made some swift, significant and much needed savings across the council.  We have also been laying the groundwork for the longer-term transformation of the council into a leaner, more cost effective, financially sustainable and efficient establishment able to face future challenges.

“With the implementation of this improvement plan we now have a single integrated plan to lead us forward successfully in the next phase of the improvement journey, while delivering essential high quality services that our residents can rely on.”
