Thousands flocked to a fun and action packed Armed Forces Day at Himley Hall and Park yesterday.

The centenary special from Dudley Council marked 100 years since the formation of the Royal Air Force and the end of World War I. Run in association with Black Country Housing Group, the event celebrated the work of service men and women past and present.

Entertainment for all the family including vintage fairground rides, Punch and Judy shows and craft, food and vintage stalls featured. Live performances from The Bluebird Belles, a vintage vocal harmony trio, and RAF Cosford Voluntary Band wowed the crowds.

A special medal and badge presentation was held for veterans, who were honoured for their service in the forces. Special guest and WWII veteran Les Cherrington, aged 99, was also presented with a gift from The Wings Parachute Display Team who jumped into the park during the event.

Current and historic military vehicles were displayed in the park and people enjoyed WWI and WWII themed history talks in the hall. Councillor Alan Taylor, The Mayor of Dudley, said:

“Armed Forces Day is a complete credit to all involved with organising it and it was a joy to see so many families enjoying the event today.

“I was delighted to be able to meet with some of the service men and women who give so much for our country and it was a complete honour to present veterans with their medals and badges as a way of thanks for all they have done.”
