A display commemorating those who lost their lives in World War One has just gone on display in Netherton.

The board was created as part of a partnership project between Dudley’s adult and community learning team and Pulse Plus, a group of people with learning disabilities who use art to express themselves, make friends, build confidence and have fun.

It features a large red poppy and the names of all the men from Netherton who lost their lives in the Great War. In total, 70 died from Netherton across the two World Wars. The piece was created as a collage using different forms of paper and card to create a layering effect. 

The project ran from May to July and involved learners who have learning disabilities and difficulties who access support from the adult learning team. The board was displayed at the Town Hall for Remembrance Day and was so popular it is now on display at the Savoy Centre in Netherton until Christmas. Councillor Keiran Casey, cabinet member for regeneration and enterprise said:

"This project is really special, not only because it commemorates those brave soldiers from Netherton who gave their lives in World War I, but because it has also allowed this group of learners to find out more about local history and express themselves creatively.

"The adults community learning team and Pulse Plus have enabled this group of learners to take control of their learning and feel a real sense of achievement in their work.

"We should never forget those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom, fighting to defend the great British values of freedom, fairness, tolerance, equality and democracy.”
