Forty drain covers have been stolen in a spate of thefts across Dudley borough in the last 24 hours.

The covers were taken from areas in Kingswinford, Pensnett, Dudley, Coseley and Gornal on Sunday night. Councillor John Martin, Cabinet Member for Highways and Environment, said:

"This is an appalling and irresponsible crime. We’re getting out to replace covers as quickly as we can to make them safe or putting bollards around the drains until they can be fixed.

"The police have been informed and it is estimated the cost of replacing the iron covers will be more than £5,000.”
