A former Mayor of Dudley has inspired his son’s to follow his lead in an attempt to raise money for a Cancer support charity.
Former Mayor of Dudley, Steve Waltho has raised thousands of pounds for charity in over 50 years of fundraising and his quest to help those less fortunate has had an impact on his two sons.
Last December his eldest son, Jay along with three friends climbed Mount Snowdon to raise over £1,000 to benefit local underprivileged children with gifts at Christmas.
Now, youngest son Joe is planning to attempt the same feat with work colleagues from car buyers Aston Barclay at the end of March to raise money for a cause very close to his Dad’s heart - Prostate Cancer UK.
Joe decided on the charity because Steve was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer in 2014 and probably wouldn’t be here now if it wasn’t for the wonderful work the charity does alongside the treatment he received in the care of the NHS.
Steve said: “I was rather moved by Joe’s wonderful gesture. I have been looked after magnificently within our NHS who monitored my blood levels for 7 years before deciding I required surgery in 2021 and have just had to undergo 33 sessions of follow up radiotherapy.
“I would be so grateful if anyone could spare a few pounds to support this wonderful charity."
Steve has just raised another £1,000 for Prostate Cancer by jogging a marathon distance in the month of January and is preparing to climb his final 16 of the 214 Wainwright peaks in the Lake District in early April raising more money for the Mayor of Dudley’s charity.
Joe and wife Emily along with Steve’s wife Jayne are planning to join him on the final peak.
Anyone who wants to donate can visit Joe’s JustGiving page at justgiving.com.
Steve is also planning the 12th annual Bert Bissell Memorial Society climb of Ben Nevis between 14th and 17th August. He is Chair of the group which celebrates Dudley’s legendary peacemaker.
There are still places available so if anyone fancies a go at climbing Britain’s highest peak then please email Steve or call him on 07703 308463 for details.
