Halesowen MP joins virtual school assembly

Halesowen and Rowley Regis MP, James Morris, joined pupils at Rowley Hall Primary School this week for a discussion around online safety.

Mr Morris took part in a ‘Be Internet Legends’ livestream with pupils where he stressed the importance to them of keeping safe online.

The ‘Be Internet Legends’ initiative, organised in a joint initiative by ParentZone and Google UK, is offering livestream assemblies, virtual workshops and other resources to teachers, parents and school children to make them aware of the dangers they could encounter whilst online, and ensuring they have the procedure to report anything that makes them uncomfortable. James said:

“The internet is a great tool for learning, entertainment and keeping connected to each other, and it’s helped many children over the last few months whilst they have been unable to go to school.

"Unfortunately we know that there are dangers they could potentially encounter online so it’s important children have the awareness they need, and I was pleased to play my part in helping the children at Rowley Hall.”

The sessions also make children aware of phishing scams, being careful about who they share content with and being kind to others.

Speaking virtually from his office in the House of Commons, James reminded pupils that the internet is an exciting tool to use but encouraged them to use it wisely and follow the advice they were learning as part of the initiative. Vicki Shotbolt, Founder and CEO of Parent Zone, said:

"It is essential that children learn to think carefully and critically about what they do and see online. Parent Zone has teamed with Google to teach younger children the essential tools they need to become safe and confident online explorers.

"These sessions help them be resilient, kind and positive in this digital age”.
