One of the force’s newest crime-fighting canines has already shown a keen scent for suspects after sniffing out a group of suspected school burglars.

Police Dog Skye has quickly sprung into action after flying through the force’s dedicated dog training unit in Balsall Common.

The 17-month-old showed her dogged determination after a suspected stolen vehicle was abandoned following a police pursuit earlier this month.

Skye was dispatched to the area with handler PC Brian Cooling and found the suspected driver crouched under a child’s trampoline in a Kitts Green garden; he was detained and established to be wanted on recall to prison. 

There was no ‘paw-sing’ for breath as just hours later the pair were called to reports of a burglary at a school in Alum Rock where hammers were brandished and damage was caused.

Three 15-year-old boys were arrested on suspicion of burglary and were released under investigation as enquiries continue.

The crime fighting duo will be aiming for many more years of catching crooks, sniffing out valuable evidence and finding vulnerable, missing people. Brian said:

"It was far from a quiet introduction but Skye showed her tenacity and already has the scent for suspects. Skye may be new but she is already proving to be a great companion and a reliable police dog. 

“Hopefully, she can continue to help keep the streets safe for some time to come."
