Children at an Oldbury school are asking parents to “show you care and park elsewhere” to make their journeys to and from school safer.
The pupils at Brandhall Primary have been working with Sandwell Council’s road safety team to create banners to hang on railings around the school. Highways engineers are looking at more measures to improve road safety in the area.
The team have also been running assemblies teaching children about road safety and encouraging them to get the message to parents and carers that parking outside schools is dangerous and causes pollution. Head teacher Liz Hart said:
“The road safety team launched our campaign for safer parking with an interactive assembly for the children. They really helped us to get the message to parents.
“The children loved the banner competition and we had over one hundred entries, they look amazing and are a great reminder to parents to make sure they park safely.”
Sandwell Council’s cabinet member for highways and environment, Councillor David Hosell, added:
“The children produced some fantastic artwork and I think it’s a really powerful message when it’s the children themselves telling parents to park safely outside their own school.
“We will be continuing to work with the school, parents, children, our traffic enforcement officers and the police to support parents and children to make their journeys to and from school as safely as possible.”
