Quarry Bank Tennis Club is now more than 100 years old, and prides itself on being open to members of all ages and abilities and has successfully hosted its Annual Quarry Bank Open Championship.
The event took place over 2 weeks with the finals being keenly contested with a specially trained Ball Crew in attendance. This year the event was sponsored by Cradley Heath based charity, Aashiana.
Despite rain, attendees of the tournament praised the event and the club more generally as a truly a local Black Country gem that deserves to be recognised for the valuable service given to its members.
Now more than 100 years old, the club prides itself on being open to members of all ages and abilities. Attending the event, Dudley South MP Mike Wood said:
“I was particularly impressed with the number of young members the club have, with many of the children working as ball crew at the tournament.
“It really was great to see so many people in attendance, how well the club is thriving, and to hear about their plans to develop a bespoke children’s tournament for younger players.”
Just prior to the finals, the club's outgoing President David Payne, unveiled a bench in memory of one of the club’s long-standing members Jerry Hall. The charity was represented at the event by Vice-Chair Dev Dutt Tewari, Treasurer Shanta Sadier, member Manohar Sadier, member Reva Tewari and member Aman Puri. Mr Puri thanked the club and all attendees for helping to make the event successful. He commended the ongoing commitment of Stacey Billingham (Membership Secretary) and Nikki Parkes as the 'heartbeat' of the club.
Their voluntary work and coaching, under Prosser Tennis Academy which operates from the club, has been key for the longevity of the club's recent past. Aashiana, the event sponsors, also donated money to install additional benches for spectators.
From next year, the club hope to hold a season opening tournament for children on an annual basis sponsored by Aashiana.
