Sandwell Council is welcoming the announcement in the 2023 budget that £20m of funding will be made available to regenerate Tipton town centre.
Announced as part of the Budget on Wednesday by the Chancellor of the Exchequer, funding to regenerate Tipton town centre would be one of the 16 regeneration projects across England to be awarded grants of £211 million in total.
In addition to the £20m awarded by the Government, Sandwell Council will be contributing £2 million as set out in the initial bid.
Sandwell applied for the Levelling Up Fund for Tipton to regenerate the town centre and to create new homes and new businesses in the area which in turn should attract additional investment to regenerate Tipton further.
The project will support good community relationships whilst reducing social inequality in the area. Leader of Sandwell Council, Councillor Kerrie Carmichael said:
“Sandwell Council is pleased this much-needed investment is coming to Tipton.
“The cost of living crisis has hit Sandwell hard, and in order to address our long-term challenges, we need sustained levelling up funding.
"The council worked hard to develop detailed proposals to invest £22m in order to regenerate Tipton town centre as part of the last round of bids to the Levelling Up Fund.
"This included plans to provide new homes – including affordable housing – make improvements to the public realm and to replace a number of existing, under-used, poor quality commercial premises.
"This will make a real difference to people and businesses in Tipton in years to come and the council looks forward to working with the Government to deliver on these proposals."
