The team is incredibly proud to receive a bronze award for Sports Show Of The Year at the annual National Community Radio Awards, which took place at Sheffield Hallam University this weekend.
Now in its third year, the Community Radio Awards celebrates the best of the sector, with volunteers and stations from up and down the country submitting their best output from the past twelve months. Black Country Radio’s entries were part of a total of 360 sent in from 77 stations from every corner of the UK.
Our winning sports team is a group of 20 people, providing updates and live commentaries from sporting events with a notable reputation for in-depth coverage and understanding of the local sports scene.
The nominated piece included coverage of the FA Birmingham Senior Cup, played at St. Andrews. Stourbridge FC beat four teams to get to the final including local rivals Halesowen Town, Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Bromwich Albion. The match was played in front of a crowd of over 1,250 including over 1,000 Stourbridge supporters.
Dan Richards, was also nominated for male Presenter of the Year and, although he didn't win, hos nomination means he's acknowledged as being one of the top five community radio presenters in the country. Alex Totney, CEO of Black Country Radio, said:
“We are delighted that our sports team has been recognised nationally with this award. To have been nominated amongst a large number of other stations doing great work across the UK, is something we are incredibly proud to achieve. To take home a prize is even better.
“We are also proud that Dan has been recognised, by being shortlisted in this year’s awards too."
