Organisers of the Velo 100 Birmingham cycle race say it could become one of the world’s most iconic cycle rides following its successful first ever event.
15,000 riders took to the roads on Sunday for the race, which stated and finished in the city centre, but wound its way through the Black Country, South Staffordshire and Worcestershire.
Concerns were raised about the numerous road closures, but many residents turned out in good numbers to cheer on those taking part.
Organisers CSM Active say the event’s four main charities – Cure Leukaemia, Alzheimer’s Society, Queen Elizabeth Hospital Charity Birmingham and NSPCC – along with many other good causes will receive an estimated £2 million raised by cyclists taking part.
