Tennis Star Awarded Freedom Of Dudley

Jordanne Whiley is Great Britains most successful tennis player ever.

The Mayor of Dudley served up a treat for tennis ace Jordanne Whiley when he presented her with the Freedom of the Borough at her former school today.

The Paralympian and three times Wimbledon champion is Britains most successful tennis player ever. She popped into St Margaret’s at Hasbury Church of England Primary School, Halesowen, this afternoon to be formally presented with her official Freedom scroll.

Jordanne also got to spend time with pupils and her former teachers at the school assembly. She later shared some of her insight and skills into the game, as well as staying for lunch. Jordanne, aged 24, said:

“I have been around the world and met the Queen and seen David Beckham, but this is my favourite moment of my career away from the court.

It has been really emotional because I have a strong connection with the school."

Councillor Mohammed Hanif, Mayor of Dudley, said:

“Jordanne is an incredible inspiration to everyone who wants to succeed in sport and I am thrilled to have been able to formally present her with the Freedom of Dudley Borough.

“We have a long legacy of highly decorated sporting greats in the borough from Dorothy Round to Duncan Edwards, and Jordanne is very much part of this elite group.

“I hope she continues to fly the flag for the borough around the world and we are enormously proud of all of her achievements.”

The wheelchair tennis sensation has won a string of world titles in a glittering career on the court including Wimbledon doubles, Paralympic bronze medals in 2012 and 2016 as well as Australian, French and US Open titles. In 2015 she was awarded the MBE for services to wheel chair tennis in the Queen’s birthday honours list.

In 2014 Jordanne became the first British athlete ever to win all four Grand Slams in one year and in 2015 she became The Sunday Times Sky Sports Disability Sportswoman of the Year. She has also played in nine World Cup events winning one gold, three silver and two bronze medals.
