The RAF and a distinguished businessman are the latest names in line for the prestigious freedom of Dudley borough.
Dudley Council is set to bestow the honours on RAF Cosford and Roy Richardson. The move was approved by councillors at a meeting of the full council on Monday night.
RAF Cosford opened on 15 July 1938 and next year marks the 80th year of the air force station. It has a long association with the borough, recruiting staff from around the region as well as supporting events such as Armed Forces Day. Next year also marks the 100th year of the RAF which will culminate in celebrations across the country.
Roy Richardson is a familiar face in the business world and is perhaps most famous for developing the Merry Hill shopping centre. He is also a member of the Dudley borough business champions group, which helps forge closer links with the authority and the business community to help boost the economy.
The Mayor of Dudley will officially present both with the freedom of Dudley borough at a later date. Councillor Patrick Harley, leader of the council, said:
“The freedom of Dudley borough is a huge honour and is steeped in history. I’m delighted we can highlight the work these recipients do and the achievements they have made in this way.
“They join a long list of big names to receive the honour, most recently tennis star, Jordanne Whiley and comedian, Lenny Henry.”
